Past Progressive/Continuous (I was doing, you were working…)

Englischkurs über das englische Past Progressive, das auch als progressives Präteritum oder Past Continuous bezeichnet wird.

Das Simple Present (I do) hat sein Present Progressive / Continuous (I am doing).

Das Simple Past (I did) hat also sein Past Progressive / Continuous (I was doing).

In dieser Lektion lernen wir, wie man das Past Progressive im Englischen verwendet.

Es wird manchmal auch Past Continuous, präteritum continuous oder präteritum progressive genannt, aber lassen Sie sich nicht täuschen, es ist genau das Gleiche!

1/ Bildung

‘to be’ im past simple (WAS / WERE) + Verbalbasis + ING

• I / he / she / it   was     playing, having, moving…
• we / you / they   were     doing, reading, writing…

2/ Was ist der Unterschied zwischen Past Simple und Past Progressive (Continuous)?

Sehen Sie sich das folgende Beispiel an:

• Past simple: I had lunch at noon yesterday  →  Ich habe gestern um 12 Uhr zu Mittag gegessen.
• Past continuous: I was having lunch at noon yesterday   → Ich habe gestern Mittag gegessen.

3/ Erklärung und Verwendung

Im Deutschen kann man es mit ‘im Begriff sein, …’ übersetzen. (Vergangenheitsform)

>> Man verwendet es, um über eine Handlung zu sprechen, die zu einem vergangenen Zeitpunkt im Gange war:

• We were waiting at the café.

>> Um zu sagen, dass eine laufende Handlung abgebrochen wurde (dann findet man einfaches Passiv im Satz):

• I was drinking at the bar when she called me.
• I hurt my leg while I was running in the park.
• He phoned me when we were having lunch.
• It was snowing when I went out.

>> Wenn zwei Aktionen zur gleichen Zeit stattgefunden haben, ohne dass sie sich gegenseitig beeinflusst haben (oft wird ‘while’ verwendet):

• John was watching TV while Linda was reading a book.
• I was studying while he was making dinner.
• While Dave was sleeping last night, someone stole his car.
• What were you doing while you were waiting?
• They were drinking beer, talking about life, and having fun.

>> Vergangene Handlungen, die die Person, die spricht, irritieren:

• Bob was always complaining.
• She was constantly repeating the same story.

>> Vergangene Handlungen, die sich oft wiederholten:

• He was jogging around the lake every day.

>> Um eine Person in der Vergangenheit zu beschreiben:

• When I saw him he was wearing a hat.
• The thief was wearing a black hood.

4/ Das Past Progressive/Continuous in verneinten Sätzen:

• I was not talking to you (= I wasn’t talking to you)
• You were not playing football (= You weren’t playing football)
• They were not dancing at the party (= They weren’t dancing at the party)

5/ Fragen im Past Progressive/Continuous stellen: 

• Was I playing football?
• Why were you not watching football?
• What were they doing when the show started?

6/ Aktive / passive Form

• The thief was stealing the diamond when the police arrived (Activ)
• The diamond was being stolen by the thief when the police arrived (Passiv)

⚠️ Einige Verben werden normalerweise nicht im Past Progressive/Continuous (und auch nicht im present continuous) verwendet, außer in einigen Ausnahmen. Die Liste ist nicht vollständig, aber hier sind die wichtigsten:

love / like / know / want / need / seem / mean / prefer / belong / understand / consist / suppose / remember / realise / forget / notice… 

• I needed to go to the doctor (und nicht ‘I was needing…’)
• I loved this movie ! (und nicht ‘I was loving this movie’)
• We wanted to go out but it was raining (und nicht ‘we were wanting…’)
